Impinging Jet Flows – CFD Model Validation Using 3-D Magnetic Resonance Velocimetry Data

Abstract The paper provides experimental data for single-jet and triple-jet impingement cooling flows gathered with magnetic resonance velocimetry (MRV), a non-optical experimental technique that can measure mean velocity fields and turbulence statistics with high three-dimensional spatial resolution. The authors used the detailed MRV data to validate the capabilities of modern eddy viscosity turbulence models, like the SST model and an elliptic relaxation model based on the k-ε model. The numerical accuracy of the CFD simulations was quantified and reduced to the level of the experimental uncertainty using Richardson extrapolation on a sequence of three homogeneously refined meshes. The agreement between the simulations and the MRV data was sufficient for making industrial design decisions for single- and triple-jet configurations.

Abstract

The numerical accuracy of the CFD simulations was quantified and reduced to the level of the experimental uncertainty using Richardson extrapolation on a sequence of three homogeneously refined meshes. The agreement between the simulations and the MRV data was sufficient for making industrial design decisions for single- and triple-jet configurations.
