Utilizing cadaveric simulation in vascular surgery training

Abstract

Background
As vascular surgery as a field shifts to increased utilization of endovascular techniques for the treatment of vascular surgery pathologies, open vascular surgical techniques for trainees have been impacted. Along with intraoperative exposure and teaching, cadaveric simulation has been utilized as a modality to mitigate this challenge in vascular surgery training. Utilization of high-fidelity cadaveric simulation has been utilized in multiple capacities, with various approaches, with varying levels of efficacy.
Methods
This review examines the role of cadaveric simulation in vascular surgery training and compares it with alternative modalities.
Results
The educational impact of cadaveric simulation is evidence in numerous studies, showing the benefits to high-fidelity teaching.
Conclusions
Cadaveric simulation is an excellent adjunctive tool for vascular surgical education.
