Hydrides for Dinitrogen Conversion

The activation and transformation of the inert dinitrogen (N2) molecule under mild conditions remain a profound challenge in chemistry. Recent advancements have positioned hydrides─materials containing the hydride ion (H–)─as promising candidates for N2 conversion, with notable performances in low-temperature ammonia synthesis (below 350 °C). This Viewpoint highlights the emerging role of H– in N2 activation, emphasizing its function in reductive elimination and reductive protonation to weaken the N≡N bond and facilitate N–H bond formation. Further research is essential to unlock the full potential of hydrides and expedite the development of more efficient, robust catalysts for the selective transformation of N2 into ammonia and other nitrogen-containing compounds.
