The Synthesis of Arts as a Feature of the Architectural School of NAFAA

The purpose of this article is to explore the phenomenon of the synthesis of arts in contemporary architecture and the role of education at the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (NAFAA) in shaping a comprehensive approach to the architectural profession. Research Methods. The study employs an analysis of the history of teaching the "Synthesis of Arts" course, an examination of changes in architectural education, and an investigation of the Academy's architectural workshops and their contributions to the post-war reconstruction of Kyiv. The methodology also includes an analysis of the interaction between architecture and other artistic disciplines, particularly cinema, theater, and new media. Research Results. The findings indicate that the "Synthesis of Arts" course played a key role in shaping the professional competencies of architects in the 1970s and 1980s. However, its reduction in the 2000s led to the loss of an interdisciplinary approach in architectural education. Nevertheless, NAFAA has preserved traditions of integrating artistic practices, which positively influence the development of a holistic understanding of architecture. Conclusions. The study concludes that new educational courses should be introduced to foster the synthesis of arts in architectural education and practice. Examples include "Architecture and Theater: Theatricalization of the Urban Environment," "Architecture and Photography: A Means of Abstraction and Authenticity," "Architecture and Cinema: Analyzing the Environment," "Cinematic Methods of Architectural Environment Design," and "Methods of Visual Artistic Form Creation." Updating educational programs by incorporating advanced design and spatial analysis methods will further contribute to the development of architects with interdisciplinary competencies.
