Interpretation of a Modern Style Costume in Ukrainian Painting in the Late 19th – Early 20th centuries

The purpose of the article is to determine the directions of the modern style costume interpretation in Ukrainian portrait/genre painting of the late XIXth – early XXth centuries. The research methods combine general science (method of analysis, synthesis, comparison, systematization) and art history (method of art history analysis, namely iconographic, compositional and artistic-stylistic). The options for interpreting the image of a modern style costume are distributed according to stylistic features defined through art analysis. The traits of realistic presentation of the Art Nouveau style in the works of Peter Nilus (1869–1943), Mykola Tkachenko (1850–1929), Peter Kholodny the Elder (1876–1930) were investigated. The specifics of the impressionistic approach to the image of the costume in the works of Ivan Trush (1869–1941), Olena Kulchytska (1877–1967), Ivan Pokhitonov (1850–1923), compositions of Oleksandr Murashko (1875–1919) «Paris period» were articulated. The modern style costume interpretation of the painting created at the same style period was noted in the portraits by Oleksandr Murashko, Vsevolod Maximovich (1894-1914). Fouvistical and expressionistic manifestations marked the formation of a costume in the painting of Olexandra Exter (1882–1949), Oleksa Novakivsky (1872–1935), Sonia Delaunay (1885–1979). Polystylism of a number of works of Ukrainian painting, which was represented by the fashionable outfit of the late XIX – early XX centuries, was traced: synthesis of symbolism and modernity in the impersonal portrait of «Parisienne» by Kaetan Stefanovich (1886–1920); Reminiscences of aestheticism in combination with the impressionistic painting of Ivan Pokhitonov («Vira Figner portrait»), realistic painting by Oleksa Novakivsky («Portrait of Zulia Kviletska»).
