Comparative Evaluation of the Air Core Magnetic Design for MHz+ Switching Frequency
Power electronics with a possible novel distributed system pose fresh challenges and require continuous improvement. One approach is to increase the switching frequency, thereby reducing size and weight. However, high switching frequencies introduce new challenges for ferrite-based magnetics. This work explores several air-core mutual inductance designs intended for operation at a 1 MHz switching frequency. Simulations were conducted to analyze resistance and inductance variations with respect to switching frequency and magnetic field, considering both proximity and skin effects. Experimental prototypes of mutual inductance and a microconverter were developed to validate the simulation results and calculations.
