Two-Terminal Self-Rectifying Metal-Insulator-MoS 2 Optoelectronic Synapse for Neuromorphic Vision Systems

Optoelectronic synapses are promising candidates for in-sensor computing systems due to their ability to process and retain light-sensitive input. Furthermore, two terminal devices have the advantage of simpler fabrication and higher-density integration compared to three-terminal devices. Self-rectifying characteristics are beneficial in order to negate the need for access transistors and avoid sneak-path current. We present a two-terminal self-rectifying optoelectronic synapse with the demonstrated circuit-design friendly light intensity-dependent conductance tuning approach [1, 2]. The device features an interfacial conductance switching, high ON/OFF ratio, and self-rectifying characteristics, showing potential for in-sensor computing.
