Low-Latency Communication in IoT Devices using Mesh Network Protocols for Networking
Real-time applications such as smart cities, healthcare, and industrial automation depend on low-latency and efficient connectivity provided by the Internet of Things (IoT). Traditional networking techniques such as centralized and star-based topologies are not well-suited for massive Internet of Things (IoT) deployments due to their poor scalability and excessive latency. Although mesh network protocols offer decentralized alternatives, real implementations often are plagued by issues of congestion and inefficient routing combined with energy wasting. This new protocol, using realtime variables such as those for congestion, connection reliability, and node energy levels, enhances data transmission while dynamically changing routes. To gain efficiency, predictive load balancing is incorporated into adaptive routing and also priority-based processing of data under the DAM Protocol. In general, results obtained from simulations that have been performed on an Internet of Things testbed show improvements of 20% in terms of energy efficiency and 30% in packet delivery rates for DAM compared with mesh protocols; and 40% in reduced latency.
