A MIMO Five-Port Antenna with Pattern and Polarization Diversity for 5G WLAN Applications

A five-port MIMO antenna with pattern and polarization diversity is proposed. The antenna consists of a chamfered-edge square patch antenna and four identical printed dipoles. The patch antenna operates across 5.35-5.7 GHz. Through chamfering and offset feeding, the square antenna generates a broadside radiation pattern with circular polarization. Four dipoles operate over <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$5.3-6 \text{GHz}$</tex>, providing end-fire radiation patterns with linear polarizations in four directions respectively. For the proposed antenna, the isolation between each element is lower than −20 dB within the operating frequency range. The overall antenna dimension is <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$1.03 \lambda_{0} \times 1.03 \lambda_{0} \times 0.024 \lambda_{0}$</tex>, where <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$\lambda_{0}$</tex> is the wavelength of the electromagnetic wave at 5.6 GHz in free space. The simulation results of the proposed antenna well demonstrate that it can realize both pattern and polarization diversity, which is highly suitable for 5 G WLAN applications.
