Waste Management of Lithium Ion Battery
The usage of lithium batteries has increased dramatically in recent years as the electric vehicle sector has been growing at a faster rate. Lithium batteries are used in a variety of applications such as electric vehicles, consumer electronics, energy storage systems and portable power tools which lead to the disposal of large number of batteries after their lifetime. JMK Research and Analytics Pvt. Ltd. estimates that the Lithium-ion battery market will reach 132GWh by 2030. This highlights the importance of efficient battery waste management for sustainability in the power sector. By 2040, it is estimated that 21 million spent lithium battery packs will be produced that can pollute the land and endanger public safety. Extensive research has been done for safe management and recycling of spent lithium batteries so that they can contribute to the economic development of the country. This paper describes how spent battery pack of 48V, 1150Wh is dismantled and good cells are used to make 24V, 12Ah battery which is used for LED lighting. Damaged cells can be recycled to get recovery materials from the anode, cathode, and separator which can be used for a variety of applications.
