The Tsunami Wave Calculation in Large Domains by Grid Decomposition

Modern multiprocessor computing systems can significantly reduce the time to calculate tsunami wave propagation, making it possible to estimate right after the seismic event the alongshore distribution of the expected wave height and the area of probable inundation at different parts of the coast. However, the limited size of memory resources of existing computational hardware does not allow rapid calculation of the tsunami propagation on a highly detailed grid. In this paper, a grid partitioning method into smaller sub-grids is proposed, which allows quickly determining the inundation zone area and calculating the expected height along the coasts with high level of detail on limited computational resources. The proposed grid partitioning approach will help to obtain accurate results for a particular region even using a regular personal computer.
