Challenges in Enforcing Cybersecurity in Africa's Renewable Energy Sector

The need for strong cybersecurity measures is becoming more and more important as Africa continues to expand its renewable energy installations at a rapid rate to meet the continent's increasing electricity demands. Based on a thorough review of the literature, this study identifies and examines the major obstacles to the successful implementation of cybersecurity controls in renewable energy installations throughout Africa, including the lack of regulatory frameworks, a lack of cybersecurity knowledge and expertise, a lack of investment in cybersecurity infrastructure, and the prevalence of legacy systems and outdated technology. These obstacles not only compromise the integrity and dependability of renewable energy systems but also expose critical infrastructure to data breaches, disruptions in the energy supply, and financial losses. The socioeconomic factors—such as lack of international collaboration, resource limits, and geopolitical instability—that contribute to cybersecurity issues in African renewable energy installations are also examined in this research. To improve cybersecurity resilience framework or proposed model in the renewable energy industry, policymakers, energy stakeholders, and cybersecurity experts may benefit greatly from the insights this research offers by clarifying these intricate interdependencies. In the context of sustainable energy development in Africa, this study adds to the larger conversation on cybersecurity by taking a multidisciplinary approach that includes technological, regulatory, and socioeconomic viewpoints.
