Estimation of Extreme Wind and Wave Statistics Under Tropical Cyclones for the Design of Offshore Wind Turbines

This paper introduces the application of a Monte Carlo-like approach to assess extreme wind and wave statistics at offshore wind farms exposed to tropical cyclones. It relies on the use a 10 000-year synthetic database of tropical cyclones [1] which is applied to generate wind and waves at a site of interest on the US East coast. The wind fields are generated using a parametric model accounting for wind field asymmetry [2] and a simplified wave approach relying a pre-computed wave field database [3]. The paper discusses the limitations of this approach and the remaining steps to provide a more comprehensive estimation of extreme wave and wind statistics at sites exposed to tropical cyclones and mid-latitude storms.
