Multi-band Rectenna Based on Metamaterial
This study presents an advanced multiband rectifying antenna tailored for wireless energy harvesting. The proposed design integrates a bidirectional complementary splitring resonator (CSRR) metamaterial antenna, optimized for multiband performance, with a modified hybrid junction ring rectifier comprising four rectification branches. The system efficiently captures ambient radiofrequency energy from GSM (1.8 GHz), UMTS (2.1 GHz), WiFi (2.45 GHz), and 4G (2.6 GHz) frequency bands. Manufactured on an FR4 substrate with a thickness of 1.57 mm, the prototypes exhibit substantial size optimizations in both the antenna and rectifier components. The CSRR antenna achieves maximum realized gains of 2.41, 2.26, 1.58, and 2.69 dB at the respective frequency bands, along with a 63.75% reduction in antenna dimensions and a 23.62% decrease in rectifier size compared to conventional designs. To enhance energy harvesting efficiency, the system incorporates a rectification circuit with Schottky diodes and an impedance matching network, ensuring optimal power transfer between the antenna and rectifier across the targeted frequency ranges. The hybrid ring junction further facilitates independent impedance matching for each rectification branch.
