Piecewise Constant Approximation of Tsunami Source

The paper studies the issue of optimal selection of the so-called unit sources for fast (within 30 seconds) determination of the basic parameters of the tsunami source. Method is based on the concept of preliminary computation of wave forms from the above unit sources. The essence of the method consists in approximating the real sea level disturbance by a linear combination of model unite sources. The coefficients of the linear combination of model sources that gives the best fit to the measured wave profile are reconstructed from the wave profile record obtained by a deep-sea pressure sensor. The smaller the size of the model sources, the better accuracy of approximation of the real wave profile can be expected. A study of the minimum size of model sources has been carried out, using which the previously proposed fast algorithm for determining the linear combination coefficients describes the measured wave profile with an acceptable accuracy of no more than 10% relative error.
