Exosome‐Loaded Contact Lenses: A Novel Approach for Sustained Ocular Drug Delivery
ABSTRACT Drug‐eluting permeable soft contact lenses are sustainable alternatives to traditional ocular drug delivery methods, such as topical eyedrops, ointments, gels, systemic delivery, subconjunctival, and intravitreal injections. A comfortable, esthetically appealing lens that can maintain consistent therapeutic levels through effective drug absorption and sustained release can provide optimal efficacy over an extended period. In this study, we explore stem cell‐derived exosome‐infused contact lens technology for effective neuroprotective regeneration and enhance ocular comfort owing to the inherent regenerative and antiinflammatory properties of exosomes. We report the successful release of exosomes from human adult dermal fibroblasts (HDFs) cells, ranging from 60 to 200 nm in size, as an effective penetrative nanocarrier for ocular therapeutics. The resulting lenses were characterized in terms of material properties and exosome release profile, demonstrating their ability to deliver therapeutic payloads effectively.
