Praying mantis to cock-walk: Clinical signs in movement disorders derived from animals

Abstract Multiple clinical signs in the field of movement disorders are inspired by the animal kingdom. We aimed to summarize such clinical signs to aid in their clinical recognition. A list of animal-derived clinical signs, compiled from the authors’ experiences and discussions, was created and further enriched through a review of the associated literature. We describe clinical signs derived from specific animal behaviors or traits, further categorizing them based on the phenomenology of movement disorders. This review acknowledges the frequent use of nature-inspired themes in medical descriptions and explores a small fraction of descriptive clinical phenomenology in movement disorders that are derived from the animal kingdom.
