Geriatric Psychiatry in Motion
Abstract: Physical activity is crucial for preventing and treating age-related impairments and mental health conditions in older adults. Structured exercise programs help counteract sedentary behavior and improve well-being. This synthesis reviews clinical guidelines and evidence on exercise interventions in geriatric psychiatry. We propose the “Geriatric Psychiatry in Motion” pathway, emphasizing (a) multiprofessional responsibility, (b) comprehensive geriatric assessment, (c) goal-setting, (d) interdisciplinary interventions, and (e) structured evaluation with transsectoral care. Research and technological advancements support the development of personalized interventions for aging and physical activity. To optimize patient outcomes, we advocate for integrating physical activity as a core treatment in geriatric psychiatry and encourage collaboration among healthcare professionals, researchers, and policymakers for sustainable implementation.
