Effects of loading rate on the failure behavior of 3D-printed lattice structures with different designs

Considering applications of Additive Manufacturing (AM) for fabrication of end-use products, the mechanical strength of additively manufactured parts gains considerable significance. In the present study, influence of loading rate on the lattice specimens are determined. To this end, short carbon fiber reinforced Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol (PETG/CF) material is used to print lattice structures based on the Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) process. Particularly, the lattice specimens are fabricated based on three different designs: (i) fourfold, (ii) honeycomb, and (iii) re-entrant. Based on a series of compression tests under displacement rates of 0.5 and 10 mm/min, the effects of loading rate and designs on the mechanical behavior of the lattice specimens are determined. In experimental tests, Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique is utilized to measure the local displacements and strain distribution. In addition, test simulations are carried out using Finite Element (FE) analysis. The experimental results and FE findings are compared and the convergence is investigated. The presented results serve as a basic data for design of AMed lattice parts, which can provide the desired mechanical behavior in lattices structures. • Design of lattice structures are performed: fourfold, honeycomb, and re-entrant. • Fabrication of lattice specimens with different geometries are explained. • In experimental part, static tests under different displacement rates are conducted. • Numerical models have been presented for the static compression tests. • The comparison of experimental findings and numerical outcomes is documented.
