Durably Antibiotic Cotton Fiber Prepared by a Combination of Silver Nanoparticles and Amyloid

Abstract Antibiotic materials are widely used in our life. In this work, cotton fibers were immersed in a mixed solution of thiourea dioxide (TD) and bovine serum albumin (BSA), and the reducing effect of TD was utilized to cause a phase transition of bovine serum albumin (PTB) and the rapid generation of amyloid‐like aggregates. AgNPs‐PTB @cotton fiber was prepared by using PTB coating as a secondary reaction platform and utilizing the coordination between sulfhydryl groups on the surface of PTB and silver ions to generate silver nanoparticles by in situ reduction of silver ions on the surface of the fiber. The results showed that the antibacterial rate of cotton fibers coated with AgNPs‐PTB could reach 99% against both Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) . What's more, antibiotic cotton fiber's antibacterial rate remained at 95% after 50 times of washing. At the same time, we found that the antibiotic fiber has an excellent inhibitory effect on the growth of Penicillium sp . and Aspergillus niger (A. niger) . Based on the excellent antimicrobial effect of the AgNPs‐PTB coating, the textile surface modification method in this work provides a new way to develop functional textiles.
