A 3D‐Printed Dielectric‐Loaded Transition for Millimeter‐Wave Surface Wave Transmission Over Power Line

ABSTRACT In this study, a 3D printed dielectric‐loaded waveguide TE 10 to single conductor transmission line TM 01 mode transition is proposed for millimeter‐wave surface wave transmission over power line. The TM 01 mode is transferred by dielectric‐filled waveguide structure to propagate in a single‐conductor power line. The transmission insertion loss is less than 1 dB with over 90% transmission efficiency on 58.0–67.5 GHz, which is higher than that of over the air. By using a pair of the proposed transition, a 100 mm millimeter‐wave power line communication system is established. The system transmission coefficient is simulated with −5.5 dB between 53.0 and 65.5 GHz. It is found that the fabricated system exhibits close resemblance with the simulated result with 1 dB difference which verifies the feasibility of the surface wave transmission scheme for 60 GHz power line communication.
