Testing Gecko-Inspired Rollers for Lunar Dust Mitigation
This study describes the design of a test stand to determine optimal operational parameters for gecko-inspired rollers across diverse laboratory conditions, mimicking scenarios encountered by astronauts or cleaning robots. Addressing the need for sustainable and efficient cleaning solutions, this research contributes to an innovative approach to mitigate the damaging effects of dust particles on the moon. Employing a specially designed test stand, the gecko roller is operated under non-vacuum conditions, with precise control over downward force and a thorough assessment of rolling characteristics. Systematic variations in parameters such as downward force, initial surface dust, and roller dust are executed to gauge the roller’s effectiveness. A rotational cleaning mechanism, leveraging centrifugal forces to maintain roller cleanliness, is also integrated to address challenges in maintaining performance during prolonged operations. The study utilizes before-and-after photos alongside measurement of dust weight to quantify the roller’s performance. Results showcase the gecko roller’s adaptability to diverse working conditions, demonstrating efficacy across a spectrum of downward forces, dust levels, and roller dust. The inclusion of the rotational cleaning mechanism significantly enhances the roller’s usability by ensuring consistent performance. The before-and-after photo analysis, coupled with the collected dust weight measurements, offers a holistic quantification of the roller’s effectiveness, revealing insights into its performance. The roller’s versatility and innovative cleaning methods make it a compelling candidate for various scenarios under simulated lunar conditions.
