Python-Based Workflow for Geometry Creation in Computational Fluid Dynamics
Traditional CAD tools have been widely used for geometry creation in CFD, but they present several limitations. Common data exchange formats for CAD such as STEP and IGES lose critical information during file export, such as the build process, constraints, and permissible variable changes. Furthermore, although you can use product data management software to change a parameter and export the file again, this can be quite cumbersome, especially during the conceptual design phase of an aircraft, when the geometry is still relatively simple. A custom-built Python API offers a more flexible alternative, providing a versatile set of functions for rapid vehicle geometry development. This approach allows for incremental changes at any stage of the geometry creation process, enabling quick revisions and modifications. Additionally, it supports scripting for geometry creation, topology definition, mesh generation, and CFD simulations, significantly improving workflow and repeatability. This paper demonstrates the advantages of Python scripting for geometry generation in CFD, highlighting that while CAD tools have their place, scripting provides a more flexible and efficient alternative for iterative design and analysis.
