Study on coated tool damage mechanism for cutting Ti6A14V based on ABAUQS Simulation

Abstract The breakage mechanism of coated tool YBG205 cutting titanium alloy Ti6A14V is studied in this paper. On the basis of ABAQUS software simulation of the cutting process, combined with the actual cutting test, the simulation results show that the stress near the tool tip in the cutting process is the largest. With the increase of cutting speed, the stress value at the tool tip also increases sharply, which is consistent with the result that the tool damage in the actual cutting process is the tool tip damage. At the same time, with the increase of cutting speed, the time of tool tip breakage in actual cutting tests is shortened, which also indirectly verifies the positive correlation between tool tip stress and cutting speed in simulation. The above results prove that it is reasonable and feasible to use ABAUQS software to simulate the process of coating a tool cutting titanium alloy Ti6A14V.
