Characterization of the microstructure performance evolution of the ceramic oxide film layer on magnesium alloy Micro-Arc oxidation under the influence of particle additives
Abstract Magnesium alloys, with their low-density characteristics, have shown significant potential for application in aerospace and 3C electronic products. However, the surface of magnesium alloys tends to react with oxygen, forming a loose and porous oxide layer that exhibits insufficient corrosion and abrasion resistance, thereby limiting their life cycle in engineering applications. Micro-arc oxidation technology, known for its low cost, environmentally friendly nature, and convenient operation, has emerged as an effective method for enhancing the surface properties of magnesium alloys. In this study, we discuss in detail the significant effects of micro/nanoparticle additives on the micro-morphology, phase composition, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance of the ceramic oxide film layer formed on magnesium alloys via micro-arc oxidation. We also analyze the role of additives in the growth mechanism of the oxide film layer. Furthermore, this paper offers perspectives on the future research directions of micro-arc oxidation technology, aiming to facilitate the further development and engineering application of magnesium alloys.
