Turbocharger to Turbojet Conversion
This paper documents a senior design project focusing on converting an automotive turbocharger into a turbojet which will be used to illustrate key concepts from thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, and instrumentation to future Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) mechanical engineering undergraduate students. This paper describes the detailed designs of the combustion chamber, nozzle, oil delivery system, and instrumentation system along with supporting computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and finite element analysis (FEA) analysis which guided the preliminary design of these subsystems. Prototypes which were created and tested to validate the numerical simulations and determine any modifications that needed to be made to the initial designs are also described before concluding with a progress report on the final fabrication.
