Developing a Sustainable Framework to Support Online Research Training Workshops for Postgraduate Students Using Microsoft Teams

The rapid transformation in postgraduate research training has necessitated sustainable online solutions supporting student development. This systematic review examined the effectiveness of Microsoft Teams in supporting postgraduate research training workshops. Following constructivist paradigm principles, the analysis comprised 14 studies published between 2014–2025 using Braun and Clarke’s six-phase thematic analysis approach. The study, guided by the Technology Acceptance Model and Diffusion of Innovation Theory, revealed six key themes: effectiveness of online training, student engagement, accessibility, implementation challenges, sustainability, and pedagogical strategies. Findings indicate that Microsoft Teams effectively facilitates collaborative learning and research skill development when supported by appropriate institutional infrastructure and pedagogical approaches. However, challenges persist regarding digital accessibility, faculty preparedness, and student engagement. The study proposes a comprehensive framework for sustainable online research training, emphasising the importance of hybrid learning approaches and institutional support systems.
