Advanced nursing rounds for polytrauma patients in the ICU – a collaborative effort between ICU and trauma ward professionals

Abstract Introduction Our innovative approach focuses on polytrauma patients, with their complex medical and nursing care needs. Advanced nursing rounds in the ICU for trauma patients are designed with the patient at the center. These rounds enhance care strategies, foster nursing knowledge, and support the early initiation of long-term rehabilitation goals. This project aims to implement nursing rounds for polytrauma patients in the ICU to address their specific needs better, reduce readmissions, and ensure smoother transitions to lower levels of care. Method Beginning in autumn 2023, the project, which is a collaborative effort between ICU nurses and advanced specialist nurses from the trauma ward, will follow an implementation science framework. It will include polytrauma patients, requiring intensive care for at least 72 hours at a trauma level one hospital, with advanced nursing rounds scheduled once a week. A structured, scientifically grounded nursing round template will ensure systematic care. Result Ten nursing rounds have been performed since autumn 2023. Early results suggest that implementing nursing rounds for polytrauma patients has led to significant improvements in care quality, addressing the complex needs of this patient population. Importantly, no patients receiving nursing rounds have been readmitted to the ICU, indicating a promising future for this approach in managing complex trauma cases. Discussion Advanced nursing rounds for polytrauma patients have enhanced care quality and increased family satisfaction. The absence of ICU readmissions further indicates that this approach may improve management of complex trauma cases.
