Mechatronics on Evolutionary Biology, Bio-inspiration and Biomimetics Turned into Space Technologies for the Moon

This manuscript shows innovative proposal solutions that could benefit the integration of biomimetic systems into the Lunar environment. Bio-inspired technologies are transforming lunar exploration by mimicking natural systems to address the unique challenges of extraterrestrial environments. Adaptive locomotion inspired by quadrupeds, hexapods, and serpentine creatures has led to robots, which excel in navigating rugged terrains and confined spaces. Soft robotics mimicking caterpillars and worms enable precise regolith interaction, while jumping robots modeled after frogs and locusts offer innovative mobility solutions. Digging robots inspired by badgers and moles demonstrate enhanced excavation efficiency for in-situ resource utilization (ISRU). Energy systems also benefit from biomimicry, with solar panels using lotus leaf-inspired coatings for dust resistance and heliotropic designs for optimal energy capture. Biomimetic batteries, microbial fuel cells, and artificial photosynthesis systems provide sustainable energy storage and generation, while thermal management solutions draw on mechanisms like camel humps and elephant ears. Also, advanced materials, including bio-hybrid actuators and self-healing composites, improve durability and functionality under extreme lunar conditions. Swarm robotics, inspired by ants and beavers, enable autonomous construction and resource allocation. These systems, coupled with ethical practices like closed-loop manufacturing and ISRU, enhance mission sustainability. Testing in simulated lunar environments validates these innovations, ensuring reliability and adaptability. By integrating bio-inspired locomotion, energy, and multifunctional systems, biomimetics promises to revolutionize lunar exploration, paving the way for resilient and efficient long-term operations.
