A Microstrip Patch Antenna Array with Low Profile and Dual-Polarized Characteristics

In this work, a low profile, dual-polarized, L-band microstrip patch antenna array is proposed. The array is constructed by two rectangle patch and T -sharp microstrip coupling line. Each rectangle patch with two feeding points can excite horizontal polarization and vertical polarization. To obtain the circle polarized wave, the two orthogonal feeding points which is on the same patch connect with the 90° bridge. Each radiation unit has wide beam characteristic, which can be applied to avoid beam scanning in certain visible airspace. The detection of linear obstacles can be achieved by the sensitivity to polarization of the linear targets and specific algorithm when transmitting different polarized electromagnetic wave (vertical polarization, horizontal polarization, and circle polarization). The thickness of this array is smaller than <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$0.1 \lambda$</tex>, which means the profile is low. These properties can reduce the number of devices in system, which means the reduction of the cost, volume, complexity, and weight of the system. As the result, this work has good application prospect and benefit in the future.
