Analysing the Impact of Artificial Intelligence Tools on Student Engagement in Online Learning in China

This study explores the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools on student engagement in online learning environments in China. Employing a quantitative research methodology, the study utilised structured questionnaires to assess three types of AI tools: adaptive learning systems, intelligent tutoring systems, and AI-enabled automated feedback mechanisms. The sample comprised 62 participants from diverse age groups. It was found that AI-supported automated feedback mechanisms were the most reliable and valid quantitative instruments among all studies, with Cronbach’s alpha of 0.851, a Composite Reliability of 0.888 and an Average Variance Extracted of 0.666. On the same note, the Intelligent Tutoring Systems was most highly correlated to the engagement levels where r = 0.742, indicating that the system fostered a good studying environment. Furthermore, findings showed that AI tools had a positive influence on students’ engagement levels, where the statistical analysis showed a value of p < 0.05. The results of the study imply that AI interventions improve the overall level of student engagement and are responsible for about 62% of differences in the level of engagement.
