A class of singular Sturm–Liouville problems with discrete spectrum

Abstract We consider a general set of singular eigenvalue problems for the Sturm–Liouville equation on a finite interval. The equation coefficients behave as properly limited but otherwise arbitrary powers near the interval ends ensuring that at least one of the latter is singular. We prove that the spectrum of such problems consists of discrete eigenvalues using an original simple method to demonstrate it.
