Overview of Ligustrum Lucidum

The evergreen plant Ligustrum lucidum, often called glossy privet, is native to China and is grown for both decorative and therapeutic uses all over the world. Its fruit (Fructus Ligustri Lucidi) is prized in traditional Chinese medicine for its hepatoprotective, anti-diabetic, anti-tumor, and immune-boosting qualities.Current pharmacological research supports functions like antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-osteoporosis effects. In particular, triterpenoids (oleanolic acid, ursolic acid), flavonoids, secoiridoids, phenylethanoid glycosides (e.g., salidroside), and polysaccharides are responsible for its bioactivity. These chemicals' productivity and efficiency are increased by a variety of extraction procedures, such as those that use microwave and ultrasonic assistance.Wide tissue distribution is shown by pharmacokinetic investigations, with the liver serving as the main site of accumulation. Its pharmacological potential, however, is supported by animal research.
