Improving Cybersecurity Decision-Making Through Text Summarization Addressing Key Applications and Overcoming Challenges

Cybersecurity professionals face the challenge of managing large volumes of data, including threat reports, incident logs, policy documents and even social media feeds. Analyzing this information is time-consuming, making it difficult to respond quickly to potential threats. To enable timely decision-making, it is essential to extract and present key information from these reports efficiently. With the help of text summarization, important information can be extracted and presented in a concise form providing actionable insights. Text summarization has proved to be very beneficial in five key areas of cybersecurity: Threat Intelligence Extraction, Automated Incident Report & Logs Summarization, Vulnerability Reporting, Regulatory Compliance Reporting and Social Media Monitoring. In this paper, the role of text summarization in these areas have been presented along with associated challenges. Various research efforts in which the challenges are addressed have also been highlighted. In order to support faster and more informed decision-making, summarization techniques are required to be refined which has been emphasized through this paper.
