Research and Implementation of Efficiency Improvement Methods for Boost DC-DC Converters

This paper introduces a high-efficiency DC-DC boost converter. In order to reduce the energy waste caused by the static power consumption of the converter itself under ultra-light load and improve the efficiency of the converter, a light-load efficiency improvement mode (LEIM) is proposed. In this mode, most modules of the PWM working loop will be turned off, leaving only the bandgap reference, adaptive bias current comparator, conduction time comparator, and zero-crossing detection circuit(ZCD). And during the charging phase and idle phase, the above-mentioned modules are dynamically turned on or off. While maintaining the normal operation of the converter, the efficiency loss caused by static power consumption is significantly reduced. Based on the 0.18um BCD process, the proposed method was simulated and verified. The verification results show that the light-load efficiency improvement circuit works normally. The conversion efficiency under a load of 1 mA is as high as 95.7 %, and the conversion efficiency under a load of <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">${1 0 0 \text{uA} - 1 0 \text{mA}}$</tex> is all greater than <tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">${8 0 \%}$</tex>.
