Strategic Placement of Access Points for Maximizing Wi-Fi Quality
This paper addresses the problem of optimally placing Wi-Fi access points in tourist villages to enhance connectivity, improve signal quality, and support local economic activity. We explore three distinct formulations: (i) minimizing the number of access points required to achieve complete coverage; (ii) maximizing the number of people covered when the available access points are limited; and (iii) minimizing the maximum distance between any zone and its assigned access point to ensure high signal quality. A key contribution of this work is the development of robust optimization models that explicitly account for real-world uncertainties, such as fluctuating population densities and potential AP failures. Numerical experiments demonstrate that these robust formulations significantly improve coverage stability and network resilience compared to deterministic approaches, offering practical value for reliable public internet access planning in dynamic environments.
