Updates of Lightning Current Measurements on Shenzhen Meteorological Gradient Tower (2017-2023)
Lightning current measurements on tall buildings have been conducted for several decades, and the resulting statistical data are crucial for guiding lightning protection strategies in buildings. The 356-meter-high Shenzhen Meteorological Gradient Tower (SZMGT) located in southern coastal region of China (<tex xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">$113.89 \mathrm{E}, 22.65 ~\mathrm{N}$</tex>) was built up in 2016 and equipped with a lightning current measurement system in 2017. Between 2016 and 2023, a total of 89 lightning events were recorded using the current digitizer, high-speed camera, and allsky camera. Of these, current waveforms for 38 lightning or attempted upward leader events were recorded, including 26 return strokes and 19 subsequent strokes. All return strokes were observed to be negative. Statistical analysis reveals that the peak current and maximum current derivative of the lightning strokes on this tower are considerably twice as high as those reported in other regions, which may be due to the tower's height and mast structure.
