Design and Implementation of A Millimeter Wave Radar System for Traffic Detection Applications

Based on Texas Instruments AWR1843 radar sensor chip, an 80GHz chirp continuous wave (FMCW) low-power millimeter-wave radar system was successfully developed. The system achieves a breakthrough design in hardware architecture, combining low power consumption (total power consumption of 1.5W), miniaturization and strong anti-interference characteristics, and achieves a distance resolution of 3.75 cm through the ultra-wideband sweep capability of 4GHz. In order to solve the core challenges in complex traffic scenarios, such as multipath reflection, dynamic target overlap and environmental noise interference, this paper proposes a systematic optimization strategy: at the hardware level, a high-gain waveguide slot antenna is innovatively used to effectively improve the target signal-to-noise ratio; In the algorithm optimization, the CA-CFAR algorithm is introduced to reduce the false detection rate of the target and significantly enhance the target detection accuracy in the complex electromagnetic environment. Experimental results show that the optimized radar system has a low target misdetection rate and high real-time detection in traffic monitoring scenarios, which provides a reliable new perception solution for intelligent transportation systems.
