ReMoVES: A Telerehabilitation System Integrating Data Analytics and Interactive Therapy
Telerehabilitation is a rapidly evolving field that promotes continuity of care by enabling remote support for patients and allowing them to receive therapy from the comfort of their homes through digital technologies, and additionally serving as an instrument for therapists to monitor patients in rehabilitation centers. Tools such as Virtual Reality (VR) systems and motion sensors play a crucial role in helping to improve the effectiveness of treatment, offering patients the ability to participate in rehabilitation activities remotely and independently. In this framework, at the University of Genoa, the DITEN department (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Navale, Elettrica, Elettronica e delle Telecomunicazioni) developed the Remote-Monitoring Validation Engineering System (ReMoVES; numip.it/removes), an Internet of Medical Things (IoMT)-based platform for remote rehabilitation. The proposed system allows clinicians to monitor patient activities asynchronously, offering flexibility in patient-therapist interactions. One of its key strengths is the ability to collect large volumes of data over time, particularly through repeated movements. This comprehensive data acquisition facilitates the extraction of reliable and meaningful information, aiding in the assessment of a patient's performance. All collected data and signals are processed through the application layer and made accessible to the clinical team, providing valuable insights into the patient's activity execution and overall rehabilitation journey.
