Enabling Simulation of Systems of Systems by Leveraging the FMI and SSP Standards
Recent advances in Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) are promoting the use of co-simulation as a standard capability during system design and analysis. Emerging simulation practices in MBSE leverage architectural models in languages like SysML as blue-prints to enable the orchestration of simulation through model correlation. This paper investigates the opportunity for transferring these practices to a Systems of Systems (SoS) context using an available standards-based framework for co-simulation. The existing framework uses the Functional Mock-up Interface (FMI) and System Structure and Parameterization (SSP) standards for co-simulation. The framework is discussed from a conceptual and implementation agnostic-perspective towards SoS. We discuss existing pain-points for SoS and discuss how co-simulation can address these painpoints.
