Pattern-Based System of Systems Engineering for Resilient and Sustainable Production Networks – A Simulation Approach and Framework Proposal for Impact Assessment

Value creation is becoming increasingly complex and the demand for resilience and sustainability (R&S) in production networks is growing. While pattern-based approaches have been widely adopted in domains such as business model development, their systematic application to develop resilient and sustainable production networks (R&SPN) remains underexplored. This paper introduces an iterative framework that integrates a pattern-based System of Systems Engineering (SoSE) approach with simulation-based analysis to support decision-making in the design and management of R&SPN. Therefore, it is demonstrated that production networks can be viewed as a System of Systems (SoS). The simulation-based methodology is designed to quantify the impact of patterns on individual network constellations, enabling data-driven decision-making and continuous refinement of R&S strategies. Applied to a use case, the framework demonstrates its potential to enhance R&S in production networks, supporting future research and real-world implementation.
