Forward Looking Sonar Image Denoising Algorithm Based on Canny Edge Detection and Wavelet Transform

Forward looking sonar, as an important tool for underwater detection, has a wide range of applications. However, forward-looking sonar images have disadvantages such as low resolution, high imaging noise, and poor edge preservation ability. Therefore, denoising is generally performed before target recognition in forward-looking sonar images. After ordinary wavelet transform denoising, sonar images often lose the edge information of target objects to varying degrees. This paper proposes a denoising method that combines Canny edge detection with wavelet transform to address the problem of poor edge information in forward-looking sonar images caused by ordinary wavelet transform denoising. The edge information saved by the Canny operator is fused into the denoised image. Through experiments on sonar images with added Gaussian white noise, it was verified that compared to ordinary wavelet transform denoising algorithms, the denoising performance of our algorithm has been improved, and the edge preservation ability for the target object is better.
