Oil Spill Detection using Satellite Image Processing

Finding oil spills quickly and properly is essential because they pose major threats to human health, the environment, and marine life. Conventional techniques, like aircraft surveys, are frequently costly, time-consuming, and unproductive in inclement weather. To overcome these constraints, this study presents a novel strategy that makes use of satellite imagery and cutting-edge image processing methods. The goal of the project is to create an effective system for identifying oil spills by utilizing high-resolution satellite sensors such as Sentinel, MODIS, or Landsat. The first step in the process is gathering satellite photos, which are then enhanced and cleaned to reduce noise and increase clarity. Next, the algorithm recognizes salient characteristics of oil spills, like variations in the color, texture, or distinct signals in the image. The image is divided into sections that are classified as either typical water or oil spills using machine learning algorithms such as neural networks or support vector machines. In order to minimize false positives and negatives, patterns across time and space are finally taken into consideration when refining the results. This system's efficacy will be assessed through the use of an extensive dataset of satellite photos that includes both non-spill and oil spill scenarios. Important measures including accuracy, precision, and recall will be utilized to gauge its performance. The ultimate goal of this research is to produce cutting-edge instruments for environmental monitoring and disaster management, facilitating speedier reactions to oil spills and assisting in reducing their negative environmental effects
