Heterogeneous nucleation behavior of Al on single crystal {0001}Al2O3 substrate under a static magnetic field

Abstract The effect of a static magnetic field (SMF) on the heterogeneous nucleation of Al on { 0001 }Al 2 O 3 substrate was studied at the atomic scale, revealing a 4.7 °C increase in nucleation temperature. Electron backscattered diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed angle deviations in matching planes due to SMF, linked to crystallographic matching. The edge-to-edge matching model predicted orientation relationships (ORs) at interface, aligning with experiments. The altered ORs, induced by the magnetic field, suggest a change in interfacial energy, reducing undercooling. This indicates SMF can control solidification in metals by influencing heterogeneous nucleation.
