Enabling Better Systems Through Better Teams: 27 Role Profiles for Engineering Advanced Systems
Contemporary advanced systems are characterized by a high degree of autonomy, dynamic networking, human-machine interaction, and product-service integration. Developing such systems requires interdisciplinary collaboration in engineering with clear task delineation and self-responsibility through flatter hierarchies. Role models provide structure in complex organizations and enable efficient cooperation. However, studies show that responsibilities often remain unclear, limiting the impact of role models. Based on literature, corporate practices, and systematic analyses this paper proposes a comprehensive role model consisting of role clusters and profiles for engineering advanced systems. The role profiles define tasks, competencies, responsibilities, and interfaces in detail. With the help of these role profiles, companies can review and optimize their existing engineering organization, communication and collaboration.
