Research on the Security of Time-Sensitive Networking Enabled Industrial Control System

As the Industrial Internet and Industry 4.0 driving the convergence of industrial control networks and the Internet, traditional bus technology is difficult to meet the rapid growth of network traffic and scale in industrial control systems (ICS) due to low transmission performance and compatibility. By providing reliable and deterministic transmission capabilities based on standard Ethernet, Time Sensitive Networking (TSN) technology has great potential to be applied in an industrial control system to deliver the differentiated quality of service for all traffic on a single network. However, the application of TSN technology in industrial control systems also brings new security issues or increases the level of threat of existing security issues, which poses some new challenges to the protection of network security. Thus, we concentrate on researching the security issues and solutions to facilitate the application of TSN in ICS. Firstly, we introduce the architecture and characteristics of TSN-enabled ICS. Secondly, we analyze the primary security issues and challenges emerging from TSN-enabled systems. Thirdly, a brief analysis of the protection requirements for ICS is presented, along with the current development and the evolving trends of network security protection. Finally, we propose a framework USG for developing high-performance security gateway in TSN-enabled ICS.
