Electromagnetic Transient Simulation of Interturn Short-circuit Fault of Converter Transformer

The high-harmonic and high-voltage operating condition significantly increases the risk of internal short-circuit faults of converter transformer. Currently, fault analysis of converter transformers mainly relies on field inspections and simulation studies. Finite element model is commonly used due to its high accuracy. Nevertheless, the complex structures of converter transformer lead to larger scale of finite element model and longer simulation time, which are not meet the needs of rapid analysis. To address this issue, this study constructs an electromagnetic transient model to replicate the short-circuit fault development process of a faulty converter transformer. By comparing the simulation results with actual fault recordings, the accuracy of the electromagnetic transient model is demonstrated. The results indicate that the electromagnetic transient model significantly outperforms in simulation efficiency, providing an efficient modeling framework for the rapid replication of short-circuit faults in converter transformers.
