Application Research of Lightning Warning Device for Transmission Lines in the Prediction of Severe Convection Thunderstorm Activities

In recent years, extreme weather disasters have occurred frequently, and severe convective weather accompanied by lightning strikes has become one of the important causes of transmission line failures. To further reduce the risk of lightning-induced tripping of transmission lines, by installing lightning warning devices on transmission line towers, the changes in the atmospheric electric field and meteorological elements in the transmission channel during severe convective weather are monitored in real time. By calculating the cumulative difference of the atmospheric electric field intensity, the possibility of lightning activity around the line is judged, and combined with the lightning location information and the distance between the lightning activity and the transmission line, the level of lightning warning information is determined, thereby achieving the lightning proximity warning of transmission lines under severe convective weather. By analyzing the monitoring data and warning application effects of lightning warning devices installed on transmission lines in northern Hebei during a severe convective thunderstorm weather event in 2024, it was verified that meteorological data such as atmospheric electric fields would undergo drastic changes before the occurrence of severe convective weather. Combined with lightning location data, more accurate lightning and short-term proximity warnings can be achieved.
