Online Learning Perceptions of Adult Learners in the New Normal Learning Environment: A Case Study of Bangladesh Open University
The impact of COVID-19 has compelled educational institutions to adopt a new approach to learning, ushering in a shift towards online education. This change prompted a study to understand how adult learners perceive online learning in this new normal. The research focused on adult learners at the Bangladesh Open University (BOU) School of Business (SOB). A mixed sequential explanatory method was employed to gather insights from 310 adult learners. Quantitative data was acquired through a questionnaire, while qualitative data was collected via Focus Group Discussions (FGDs). Quantitative data underwent SPSS analysis, while qualitative data was subjected to constant comparative and content analysis to identify themes and sub-themes within respondents' viewpoints. The study found a moderate yet hopeful attitude towards online learning among adult learners. The results indicated that adult learners' perceptions of online learning varied across dimensions such as online course delivery, teaching quality, communication activities, and course materials. Adult learners found appeal in the flexibility, learner-centered approach, and skill enhancement offered by online learning. However, challenges included the expense of internet connectivity, limited bandwidth, and insufficient training. Suggestions for improvement included implementing proper training programs, providing accessible device loans, and enhancing the university's learning management system (LMS) to ensure a more compelling online learning experience.
