Synthesis and characterization of strontium modified dolomite for CO2 capture

Dolomite-based materials have attracted considerable attention for high temperature CO₂ capture due to their natural abundance and reactivity; however, their performance is often compromised by structural degradation over multiple cycles. In this study, Strontium-modified dolomite (Sr-MD) was successfully synthesized via a mechanochemical technique and thoroughly characterized. A comprehensive structural and morphological analysis, using XRD-Rietveld refinement and TEM microscopy, revealed the Sr incorporation into dolomite matrix and the impact of Sr on its morphology. TEM-EDS demonstrated homogeneous Sr distribution throughout the Ca-Mg matrix. Rietveld analysis quantified phase fractions and identified subtle structural modifications induced by Sr doping, including changes in crystallite size and strain. High resolution TEM revealed the formation of MgO crystals within the matrix as a structural stabilizer and their migration to the surface. Furthermore, TGA 15 multicycle CO₂ capture analysis showed that Sr-MD exhibited a high initial CO₂ uptake of 11.4 mmol CO₂/g (50.16 wt%) and retained 9.7 mmol CO₂/g (42.68 wt%) after 15 cycles, with only 14.1 % deactivation. • Successful Sr-modified dolomite synthesis via mechanochemistry; homogeneous doping. • High CO₂ uptake (50.16 wt%) & cyclic stability (<15 % deg after 15 cycles). • Dual stabilization: Sr-doping & MgO crystals as structural support. • Comprehensive characterization shows structural changes & Sr distribution. • High retained capacity demonstrates industrial carbon capture potential.

Abstract

Dolomite-based materials have attracted considerable attention for high temperature CO₂ capture due to their natural abundance and reactivity; however, their performance is often compromised by structural degradation over multiple cycles. In this study, Strontium-modified dolomite (Sr-MD) was successfully synthesized via a mechanochemical technique and thoroughly characterized.
